Reminiscing the noble advice and concerns of His Majesty the King.

Bhutan claim into being through violence and martial state. No history of Bhutan would explain peaceful formation of our nation state. There were internal strife for power and external threats. Although it was manageable as per the warrior might of the Drukapas so called for residing in the Drukpa land, there were battles and death. Formation of our nation state is not a history of peace and sanctity. It evolved through many struggles against the invasions from Tibet and others.

“You are the guardians of our national security and sovereignty. You are the custodians of our culture and traditions”, His Majesty In his address to the national builders attending National Graduate Orientation Program 2016.

“There are three risks which Bhutanese people must understand, complacency, mediocrity, and corruption”, His Majesty’s address to the attendees of National Graduate Orientation Program 2016.
Bhutanese are complacent on just one small success acknowledgeable or negligible. We believe little is enough but not always satisfied and at times regretful. When world has risen above the horizons to capture the panoramic view of the world’s advanced and highly competitive economy, Bhutan still exist as an independent nation with just less than one million people boasting of its unique culture and identity. We should not feel enough when we are in a competition, which nobody has initiated but the world itself and its residents. There are good indicators to our national economy development through grants and borrowings which depicts a high trade deficit that risks our imbalances to our stable economy.

Bhutan’s development has not initiated by its people but the blessings from the world economies and our loyal neighbor India through grants and borrowings. The act of outsourcing has not observed the declination with more and more qualified persons entering the market to serve our nation. On the other hand there are many brilliant young graduates complacent begging for a job not ready to embark on transformation of our nation into what to be called as justifiable independent nation. Students feel enough for their studies and qualification but not for job, position, status, and income. It is viewed as paradox when such ironies exist to bar clear conscience of differentiating true Bhutanese.

Complacency should be eliminated from the hearts of our people through proper psychological transformation not imposed through legal accord. But it is to learn how to take bull by its horns which would be far more difficult in this modern time. We should not feel enough when we have adequate resources.

It is even more viewed to be paradox when Bhutanese people choose to work abroad, when 17 of them can be fit in a square kilometer of our land. While on the other, non-national playing the role of expertise and there are still rising problems on unemployment. The concern of the government and its people should initiate self-reliance through self-transformation, just being complacent is not enough? Unlike other countries we are safe, just by some natural calamities we grieve. But not wars and battles. We must first learn to battle with our own thoughts first than advancing on any other enemies outside. We do not observe strikes and protest but scuffles in families and societies are prevalent almost everywhere from rural setting to urban settings.

We rejoice at the automation of our state’s initiative. Our benevolent and visionary kings blesses with Grants and scholarships, free medical services and education but people in return become increasingly alcoholic as medication is free of cost. Unemployment growth is a challenge at present as many students gets qualified through government scholarships and are paid high sum of stipends to become complacent for their glory and success in education. Yes! I believe too, complacency is a risk for the future of Bhutan. We cannot only rejoice at the heavenly privileges of our nation but work towards being self-reliant country without any borrowings and grants.

Since the inception of our country by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, we have what called unique culture and traditions which no country can boast of having similar of its kind. It is at first could be the acceptance from the society the practice of such kind and later it was being adopted as the legal provision but now it deteriorates. It is not by the size of its people who practice but how well it is being practiced. I am not tradition advocate but I truly believe it is our identity from the rest. If there is no compulsion and continues unchecked for our depleting culture and traditions then our fellow citizens would free of choice without aby legal obligation and compulsion put forth. It is a concern of our nation, concern for the future and concern of all the people.

Our national dresses are in displays of magazines and postures, the fine fabrics of our women’s talent in the intricacies of embroidered national dress. However it is not always been a choice of people now than legal provisions have mandated. The mediocrity of Bhutanese are revealed when our small domestic market is not well observed as a choice of market but a space on rent for marketing foreign products. Put it simply, think of a Gho and Kira, which are imported from our neighbor country India, if proven the interest in nation building, women should participate and also the men should participate in such entrepreneurship. Why not Bhutanese entrepreneurs can cater to the need of the small customers than buying from the nearest market in India, Jaigon. These are possibilities that Bhutanese people can explore and venture into. Who is to be questioned about the INR reserves and instable exchange rates? Simply ourselves. I dare say so as it is justifiable.

His Majesty in his address to the attendees of the National Graduate Orientation Program 2016, “there is no big or small corruption, the corruption itself is bad for the nation”. Should the sole responsibility of mitigating corruption be the Anti-Corruption Commission, will the problem of corruption be solved or reduced. If Bhutanese people involved in coalition, the attempts of ACC would go in vain. Therefore it is wise enough to say all Bhutanese people should collaborate to fight back corruption. It is not just a single problem at present but a problem for all and the future.

The land of Thunder Dragon is blessed with many religious denominations of which Drukpa Kyagu is the dominant sect, and renowned people as devout believe considerably in cause and effect (Lay Jum Drey and Tha Dam Tse). However when coming to fulfillment of desires, it would always be a matter of priority.  Where is so called Lay Jum Dre and Tha Dam Tse in Bhutanese, if such acts are prevalent? We are shameless of our boast! Should priority be placed on others than ours, it is also inequity for our self?  Then it is a question about the equal treatment of all the people in a fair and consistent manner of which benefits are mutual. Not only misappropriation of the public property and Budget would be considered as corruption but also the acts which are non-correspondence to the legal provisions and policies.

The slogan of the ACC is to refrain, report, resist and reduce corruption. The Bhutanese people should have to take collaborative concerns on corruption and fraud.
If all these things are observed properly we can at least contribute to the nation building.
These three things are important risks to be fight back, complacency, mediocrity, and corruption.

Tashi Delek!
